Get the Community Card

The community card is the document issued in Spain to family members of citizens of the European Union (including the European Economic Area and Switzerland) who are not EU citizens. This card allows non-EU family members to reside and work in Spain under certain conditions that are more favourable than those applicable to other non-EU immigrants.

COMMUNITY RESIDENCE
Citizens of the European Union, of the Member States of the Agreement on the European Economic Area (Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway) and Switzerland, and members of their families.
EU CITIZEN’S REGISTRATION CERTIFICATE – If the citizen is going to reside in Spain for a period of more than three months, he/she must apply for the registration certificate.EU CITIZEN FAMILY CARD –  El familiar del ciudadano de la Unión debe solicitar la tarjeta de familiar de ciudadano de la UE . Es un documento destinado a identificar al extranjero a los efectos de acreditar su situación legal en España. Family members of a citizen of a Member State of the E.U. or of a State party to the EEA Agreement who are not nationals of one of these States, when accompanying or joining them, may reside in Spain for a period of more than three months, being subject to the obligation to apply for and obtain a “Union citizen’s family member residence card“.

Key features of the EU Family Card

Who can apply?

  • Spouses or registered partners of EU citizens.
  • Direct descendants under 21 years of age or who are dependants.
  • Dependent direct ascendants.

Duration and Renewal

Generally, the card is issued for a period of 5 years and is renewable.

Entitlements

  • Allows you to live and work in Spain without the need to obtain additional permits.
  • It provides certain rights such as access to education and healthcare under similar conditions to Spanish citizens.

Requirements

  • Proof of the family relationship with the EU citizen.
  • Evidence that the EU citizen resides in Spain and has sufficient financial means.
  • Health insurance (in some cases).
